  11. I had very mixed feelings about _Flicker_.  It's a great read,
  12. with some wonderfully memorable characters and lots of interesting
  13. detail about the film world in the United States in the 50s and 60s
  14. (not a subject I know much about, but I imagine film buffs will
  15. enjoy it even more than I did).  The plot, however, is centred on a
  16. grand international conspiracy and just doesn't carry its weight.
  17. The problem isn't so much that it strains suspension of disbelief
  18. (though it does fit oddly with the realism of the rest of the
  19. novel), but that it just isn't interesting: *Another* international
  20. conspiracy dating back to the Cathars and the Templars?  *Yawn*.
  21. I think _Flicker_ would have been much better as a "straight" novel.
